Handmade Siesta Man Lantern | Milagros Rústicos in Mesa, Arizona

If you've ever wandered into Milagros Rústicos, chances are you've met one of our favorite characters—the Siesta Man Lantern. With his oversized sombrero tipped low over his face, legs bent, and timeless expression of total relaxation, this little figure is more than decor—he's a whole vibe.

Handmade from hand-punched tin, our Siesta Man Lanterns are a customer favorite—and for good reason.

What Is a Siesta Man Lantern?

Each Siesta Man Lantern is a handcrafted tin sculpture depicting a man resting in the classic Mexican siesta pose—sitting with knees bent, arms relaxed, and sombrero covering his face.

These lanterns are both decorative and functional. You can:

  • Leave them unlit as eye-catching tabletop or shelf art

  • Place a candle or LED light inside for a warm glow

  • Wire them with a light fixture using the flap on the back

They look incredible day or night—and they’re often the first thing customers ask about when walking through our showroom.

We usually carry three sizes of Siesta Man Lanterns—from small shelf-friendly versions to larger pieces that hold their own on a porch or entryway table.

They come in three main finishes:

  • Silver: The raw hand-punched tin for a traditional, folk-art feel

  • Bronze: Rich and rustic, with a burnished finish that catches candlelight beautifully

  • Painted: Bright, bold, and completely unique—no two are ever the same

Every painted Siesta Man is hand-decorated by artisans in Mexico. You’ll see flowers, musical notes, bold colors, and charming quirks on each one.

How to Style a Siesta Man Lantern

These lanterns are versatile enough to fit in a variety of homes and spaces. Here are a few of our favorite ways to use them:

  • On a console table in the entryway—add a small LED candle for a warm welcome

  • On a patio or porch as a laid-back conversation starter

  • Inside a rustic bookshelf or niche for a touch of whimsy

  • In a restaurant or cantina for playful, culturally inspired ambiance

Their personality is unmistakable—and they bring a relaxed, joyful energy wherever they go.

Rich Helmer

Originally from the Chicago suburb of Elgin, Illinois, Rich Helmer's family headed west to Arizona just before his final years of high school. Rich became instantly fascinated with the desert southwest. Its renowned grandeur and mysterious energy would profoundly influence his later work, as would the endless beaches of Mexico and Southern California. Rich's sonic creativity emerged at an early age, as did his unorthodox approach to artistic ventures.

As a primarily self-taught guitarist and songwriter, Rich has never been one to live by a handbook. However, after devoting most of his life to music, he abandoned his true passion and decided to seek a more "realistic" vocation. The decade-long diversion is something that Rich still occasionally laments, but he also knows that the past is just that - the past. Fortunately, Rich decided to dust off his vintage Telecaster and pursue his love of photography, leaving him with little time for regrets.

Rich dares us to consider what possibilities may lie along the path less traveled with both humility and purpose. Whether provocative, soul-stirring, inspiring, disconcerting, or some combination of these, the overarching theme in Rich's work is that, for him, the lens is much more than a curved piece of glass; it is a vehicle through which viewers can experience worlds that might have otherwise remained hidden.
